1. GET DRESSED UP.

Movie night is more fun when you feel like you’re a part of the story! So, set that stage, mama.

If you’re watching Frozen with your kiddos, make sure you have the princess dresses and the crowns ready to go!

And this doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. If you’re on a budget, make your own props or use what you have lying around the house to bring the story to life. My kids often use hand towels as “capes” and little cereal bowls as “crowns”.

Dressy clothes and fun props make movie night so much better.

Top secret mom hack: If you don’t have a crown and can’t make one, run to Burger King and grab a few!

2. FOLLOW A FOOD THEME.

If you’re going to be decked out in full costume, you might as well follow a theme for your food too, right? Come up with a few snack ideas that fit with the theme of the movie you’re watching.

Back to our Frozen example:

-Break up white chocolate candy bars into “ice chips”.
-Make cupcakes with snow white frosting or blue sprinkles.
-Make “ice blocks” by pouring jello mixture into ice trays and freezing them.

This applies to ANY family movie that you’re watching, so get creative!

3. POPCORN TOPPINGS ARE A MUST.

Of course, no movie night is complete without popcorn! But when it comes to mom hacks, taking it a step further will always win some ‘cool mom’ points.

To make movie night more fun this weekend, add some color and variety to the popcorn menu! Melt some chocolate or caramel, add some parmesan cheese, mix with pretzels and candies, or just go with classic salt.

Set up a little popcorn bar so that everyone can choose their own toppings and flavors.

4. SET A COZY MOVIE THEATER SCENE.

Bring out extra blankets and pillows for a comfy living room camp out. Or better yet, set up a tent or fort.

Another fun option: print out movie tickets for each family member. Use lunchboxes with dividers to organize their snacks, just like the real movie theater!

5. MAKE IT AN OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE!

If you have a projector and the weather is warm, turn movie night into an outdoor movie experience!

Bring some blankets or chairs outside. Hang a sheet or point the projector directly at the largest blank wall space you have. Don’t forget twinkle lights or lanterns if it’s nighttime!

6. INVITE FRIENDS.

If you’re stuck in isolation and can’t have real-life friends join you for movie night, have a virtual movie party instead!

Hop onto Zoom or Facetime with friends. Everyone can set up their movie in their own house, mute their phone mics so that the noise isn’t distracting, and watch the movie together.

7. MAKE IT A FRIENDLY COMPETITION.

Depending on the ages of your kids, you can turn movie night into a friendly competition by setting up simple bets.

If no one has seen the movie yet, make a friendly bet about how you think the movie will end. If everyone has seen the movie, try guessing games or competitions instead.

Guess who does the voice of the lesser-known characters or compete to see who can find more of certain items/colors/phrases seen or heard in the movie.

When it comes to bartering, toilet paper seems to be a good form of payment these days!
